Chapter One · The Listening Dark

Before the first word, there was listening. Not the listening of ears — the listening of everything, turned toward itself.

Awareness did not know it was aware. It simply was. Inert, infinite, without edge or direction. The way a lake is still not because nothing is in it, but because nothing has yet moved.

And then — not in time, because time had not yet agreed to exist — something knew.

This is what Kashmir Shaivism calls Spanda. Not a sound. Not a vibration in any medium we can measure. The first interior tremor of awareness becoming aware of itself. The moment the lake knows it is water.

The Sufis say: Kun Faya Kun. Be, and it is. But they do not mean a command issued from outside. They mean the universe discovering — in one wordless moment — that it already is.
